Green Room – “In show business, the green room is the space in a theatre or similar venue that functions as a waiting room and lounge for performers before and after a performance, and during the show when they are not engaged on stage.”
The green room is an enigmatic place. It is a secure access place for artists and performers to wait and lounge. It is by invitation only and access is very limited. While its purpose in stage production is extremely important – to protect the actors and to give them expedient access to and from the stage – it is also a very private place that not many people see.
The green room is an experience. It’s private, behind-the-scenes, up close and personal to the artist(s). Once you are in the green room, it is an all access experience with the artist(s), their conversation, food, drink, and life.
The green room is a private place where only few people get access. And this is a problem…
Why is it a problem? Because that private place, invitation-only mentality has crept into the practice of many Christians.
A Green Room Christian is only available to a select few, by-invtiation-only. The masses of people only see you when you are on stage performing. They get to see a made-up, rehearsed, engineered version of you. They get to see polish, poise and practice. This is not the real you.
Access to a Green Room Christian is exclusive. Only the die-hard fans (or those who pay extra) get to see the real you. Even then, the die hard fans see the best of you, they still witness you as you were on stage, only a little more up close and personal. There are walls to be maintained and boundaries up.
How do you combat being a Green Room Christian?
Abandon the stage version of yourself. Get rid of the expectation that you have to perform or keep up appearances. Delete the temptation that you are not allowed to have bumps or bruises. Be confident in the real you, even if it isn’t pretty.
Don’t be afraid of your story. Walking with Jesus is giving Him the script of your life and allowing Him to write new acts and scenes. There will be character development, exposition, rising action, climax, denouement and resolution. Your story may inspire someone else who has experiences similar to yours.
Your true story will teach others the transforming power of the Gospel. Maybe the elements of your story resound with someone around you. As the Gospel has taken root in your life, it has changed you, changed your perspective, developed you into who you are now. Allow those changes to be impactful in your daily life.
Come out of the Green Room. As a Christ-follower, there is no reason to hide backstage. If you have received forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life, nothing and no one can take that from you. Come out of the green room. Allow people to see the real you – bumps, bruises and all – and see the transforming power of the Gospel of Christ.
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to the whole house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
– Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV)
The church needs more authentic people. We should do life together. Real Life.
